Teenager Rosegie Ramos displayed her potential against her more experienced rivals after making into the Top 10 of the women’s 49kg division in the 2023 IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Ramos, a 19-year-old two-time Asian Junior champion, gave all she could to land in seventh place among 41 other competitors with a total lift of 188 kilograms.
She lifted 86 kilos for sixth place in snatch, but lost her steam in the clean & jerk with 102 kilos for 13th place after failing to complete her last attempt at 104 kilos.
Though failing to make it to the podium, Ramos surpassed her previous performance in her maiden appearance last year in Bogota, Colombia where she only lifted 75 kilos for 21st place in snatch, 95 kilos for 19th in clean & jerk, and 170-kg total for 17th place.
Her 188-kg total was also a five-kilogram improvement from her performance in the 2023 Asian Championships in Jinju, South Korea last May.
Another teen in Lovely Inan, however, did not rank in her maiden appearance after failing all her 80-kg attempts in snatch.
The 18-year-old Rizal native, who is in her biggest tournament yet following her silver-medal debut appearance at the Cambodia Southeast Asian Games last May, still fought back in clean & jerk where she lifted 106 kilos for seventh.
It was six kilos heavier than her performance in the SEAG.
Meanwhile, 2020 IWF World Cup bronze medalist John Febuar Ceniza competes in the men’s 61kg at press time in the tournament serving as one of the required events for Olympic hopefuls to Paris next year.
Reigning world champion Hidilyn Diaz and Tokyo Olympian Elreen Ando are set to clash in the women’s 59kg on Friday, Sept. 8, even as Vanessa Sarno and Kristel Macrohon compete in the women’s 71kg on Sept. 12.
