DOH calls for nutritional diversity, asks Pinoys to look for 'alternatives' to ensure food security
With the recent surge in the price of rice, the Department of Health (DOH) is encouraging the public to explore alternative food options that maintain nutritional value without compromising their health.
This was disclosed by Health Undersecretary Dr. Enrique Tayag, who said, in a media forum on Sept. 5, that diversifying basic food requirements is a practice that has proven successful in the past.
This addresses the growing concerns over food security in the face of increasing costs of rice, according to him.
By incorporating a wider variety of affordable and nutritious food items into their diets, individuals can reduce their dependence on rice and adapt to the changing economic landscape.
"Halimbawa, may mga kababayan tayo na nasanay kumain muna ng ibang pagkain maliban sa bigas katulad ng kamote, mais, at kung ano ‘yung maaaring mura (For example, some of our fellow citizens have gotten used to eating foods other than rice, such as sweet potatoes, corn, and other affordable options)," Tayag said.
Tayag also explained that these alternatives do not only provide sustenance, but also offer essential nutrients. By embracing these substitutes, individuals can maintain a balanced and nutritious diet even as rice prices remain high.
"Sa bigas naman po, nagbigay ng pangako ang ating Pangulo na kahit papaano naman po ay may ayuda po na maaaring matanggap lalo na ‘yung maaapektuhan sa rice ceiling (regarding rice, our President has promised some assistance, especially for those affected by the rice price ceiling)," Tayag stated.
The DOH also noted that this assurance of support coming from the President ensures that rice would remain accessible to a broader section of the population.
Furthermore, health experts stressed the importance of achieving a balanced diet by integrating various vegetables that are available at a lower cost.
While the cost of rice may be on the rise, Tayag emphasized that it should not be a reason for individuals to compromise on their overall nutrition.
In light of these developments, the DOH is urging the public to explore diverse options when it comes to their daily meals. These alternatives extend beyond rice, encompassing various vegetables that not only satisfy hunger but also deliver the essential nutrients required for a healthy lifestyle.
As the nation navigates the challenges posed by rising rice prices, the DOH remains committed to safeguarding the nutritional well-being of the Filipino people, offering guidance and support for healthier dietary choices that can withstand economic fluctuations, Tayag said. (Zekinah Elize Espina)
