PH enterprises showcase local products in regional market

Philippine micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) showcased their local furniture, clothing, handicrafts, textiles, and food and beverages products during the ASEAN online market event.
Nearly 100 MSMEs from the Philippines were registered by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to take part in the ASEAN Online Sale Day (AOSD), which took place from Aug. 8 to Aug. 22.
A physical launching event was also held in Semarang, Indonesia, during the 55th ASEAN Economic Ministers’ (AEM) Meeting from Aug. 19 to 22, where 14 well-designed booths exhibitions showcased the booming MSMEs, including the well-known online shopping site Shopee and medium-to-high-end business Teh Poci-Sosro. About 12 different MSMEs, including one from the Philippines, were also a part of the lively ensemble.
The ASEAN enterprises had the opportunity to exhibit their goods before high-ranking representatives from ASEAN member states, including ASEAN Business Advisory Council Chair Arsjad Rasjid, ASEAN Ministers of Trade, Ministers of ASEAN Dialogue Partner Countries, the ASEAN Secretary General, and the Minister of Trade and Investment of Timor-Leste.
Since 2020, the Philippines has been the top participant in the AOSD with the most number of business participations, proving that the country has an expanding e-commerce.
The event also allows Filipino enterprises to promote their remarkable, high-quality local products, which is vitally attached to the DTI’s goal to include local businesses in the global value chain.
By allowing Filipino MSMEs to access more channels for marketing and sales, the AOSD seeks to take advantage of the growing e-commerce sector in the ASEAN region.
“This initiative supports the country’s effort to promote Philippine exports through cross-border e-commerce by cultivating trust and confidence in e-commerce transactions, among MSMEs and its clients,” DTI Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual stated.
Pascual also highlighted the pivotal role of local MSMEs in supporting the country's sustainable economic recovery through participating in the regional effort.
This two-week event aims to converge the digital markets of the ten ASEAN members, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
Outstanding discounts and promotions from regional e-commerce companies and platforms in ASEAN were offered at the ASEAN Online Sale Day 2023 through the official event website, http://onlineasean.com. All participating businesses and markets were screened by ASEAN governments to ensure their validity, boosting consumer confidence.
The AOSD is a government-owned platform for conducting online business in a regulated, transparent, and high-quality market environment. It supports local manufacturing and commercial businesses as they embrace digital transformation within a mature ecosystem.
The Philippines contributed 35 percent of the 342 ASEAN companies that attended the event last year, setting a record for all ASEAN members. The ASEAN e-commerce business is expected to triple in size by 2025, going from $100 billion to $300 billion.
DTI also projected that this trend will continue as more customers and companies utilize online platforms. (Ma. Joselie C. Garcia)
