House Deputy Majority Leader and ACT-CIS Party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo was up in arms over the cost of tomatoes at a Quezon City supermarket, which he said has reached P12.50 apiece.
Tulfo attended on Tuesday, Sept. 5 the resumption of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food's probe on agricultural smuggling. At the hearing, the broadcast journalist-turned-congressman gave a very important message to the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI).
"Bantayan niyo na yung kamatis because the tomatoes right now, ang isang piraso ay P12.50 sa Nepa Q mart (Watch over these tomatoes becasue one piece now costs P12.50 per piece at Nepa Q mart)," an irate Tulfon said.
"Parang awa niyo na, mas mahal pa sa sibuyas itong kamatis (I beg you, these tomatoes are more expensive than onions)," he added. Nepa Q mart is located in Cubao.
The BPI is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
In the same hearing, Tulfo castigated the BPI for allegedly not performing its function of monitoring the pricess of agricultural goods sold in the market.
It was only last Aug. 14 when Tulfo accompanied House Speaker Martin Romualdez to Nepa Q mart for a surprise inspection on the prices of basic goods such as onions and rice.
"Mayroon pong nagkulang dito at hindi ginawa ang trabaho nila for reasons sila lang po makakasagot (Somebody didn't perform their jobs here, for reasons that only they know)," the ACT-CIS solon said Tuesday.
