Rice price cap only for 'short term', says Romualdez

The Malacañang-imposed price cap on rice is just a short term measure, House Speaker Martin Romualdez told Manilla-based reporters in Jakarta, Indonesia on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Romualdez, who is accompanying President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr, in the ongoing Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, was asked by the scribes about Executive Order (EO) No.39.

"Maganda kasi nalabas na kaagad ni Presidente yung EO sa price ceiling although hindi yan sa long term (It's good that the President was able to immediately issue the EO on the price ceiling, although that's not for the long term)," Romualdez said.

"[It’s] short term para maagapan at tsaka makita talaga ang lahat na seryoso talaga itong administrasyon ni Presidente Marcos na dapat sapat ang suplay at maayos ang pagbenta (It's only for the short term, to preempt the high prices, and to show everyone that the administration of President Macros is really serious in his call for ample supply proper pricing)," he added.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s Executive Order (EO) No. 39 imposed a P41 per kilo price cap for regular milled rice and P45 per kilo price cap for well-milled rice. The EO was signed amid steadily rising prices of the staple grain, which can reach between P55 to P60 per kilo.

However, Romualdez, Leyte's 1st district congressman, didn't specify until when the Palace directive would be in effect.

He only reiterated past remarks in that there shouldn't be profiteers or hoarders in the local rice industry. Rice is the Filipinos' staple food.

"Kaya warning na to at yung mga inspeksyon, tuloy-tuloy po yun. Hindi lang yan sa Luzon, abot tayo sa Visayas [at] Mindanao (Take this as a warning, and the inspections will also continue. Not just in Luzon, but also in Visayas and Mindanao)," the House leader said.
