Manila LGU monitors implementation of rice price cap in 16 public markets
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan instructed the Manila Department of Market and Permits on Monday, Sept. 4, to monitor the implementation of the rice price ceiling.
Lacuna-Pangan called on rice retailers in the city's 16 public markets to comply with Executive Order No. 39, which mandates that starting Sept. 5 regular-milled rice is priced at P41 per kilogram, while P45 per kilogram for well-milled rice.
She said that all rice retailers in the city, including the ones in supermarkets, should obey the national government's directive.
The city government warns rice sellers who will violate the mandated prices.
It noted that Sinandomeng, Dinorado, Thai Jasmine, Japonica, and premium rice brands are excluded from EO 39.
According to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), it will issue a notice to violators and will give them 48 hours to submit an affidavit of explanation and documents that will be subjected to investigation.
Meanwhile, some rice vendors in Central and Trabajo Markets in Manila closed amid the price cap change, while other vendors removed price labels from their displayed rice products.
