Eugenio Lemos, ally of food-secure future, from Timor-Leste
One of the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Awards honorees is a Timorese musician and environmental activist striving to harness indigenous and food security for future generations.

The preservation of the environment, the need for sustainable food, local autonomy, and social fairness are fundamental issues people face today, and these are what Lemos works so hard to fight for.
Lemos was introduced to permaculture in 1999 by an Australian permaculture trainer who was in Timor-Leste at that time to train farmers in sustainable agriculture.
He engaged in initiatives like founding an organization to support organic farming while studying agriculture at their local university and using his voice to impact many.
On Monday, Sept. 4, a press conference was held via Zoom for Magsaysay awardees. Lemos showed his enthusiasm by encouraging the next generation to pursue agriculture by establishing a laboratory in every school and indulging in the beauty of science.
Lemos displayed his visions, saying: "Shifting passive learning inside the classroom to active learning outside the school to teach the youth a live-for-living book rather than a written book that may be viewed in different languages in different places and cultures."
