DOLE asked to appoint union officials as 'system protectors' amid workplace tragedies
A labor group requested the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to appoint some of its members as system protectors in the wake of workplace tragedies.
Partido Manggagawa (PM) chairperson Rene Magtubo said the proposal would reinforce the country’s merely 1,200 labor inspectors that are tasked to inspect over one million workplaces across the country.
“We suggest that DOLE assist union officials as labor protectors. DOLE must inspect firms on regulation with union standards," said Magtubo.
"By doing so, the number of regulators and regulations can be multiplied several times, compliance can be reinforced and personnel's lives can be preserved," he added.
Workers' groups operating as labor inspectors, Magtubo said, will lessen instances of "intentional conformity" and "self-assessment" by employers. (Trixie Rosel)
