Marcos arrives in Jakarta for 43rd ASEAN Summit

JAKARTA, Indonesia — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. arrived here on Monday evening, kicking off his participation in the 43rd Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Summits.

Philippine Airlines Flight PR001, carrying Marcos and his delegation to the Summit, arrived at 5:59 p.m., Jakarta time. This is his third time in Indonesia since assuming office— the first was in September 2022 for a State Visit, and the second was in Labuan Bajo for the 42nd ASEAN Summit in May 2023.
Marcos will participate in 13 leaders-level events during the Summit from Sept. 5 to 7, 2023.
The President is expected to push for the country’s interests during the Summit, particularly the administration’s agenda on food and energy security and the promotion of the welfare of migrant workers.
On Tuesday, the President is expected to attend a one-on-one meeting with Indonesia Strategic Partners in the morning. He will also take part in the Opening Ceremony and the Plenary Session of the 43rd ASEAN Summit.
In the afternoon, the President will be at the Opening of the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum. This will be followed by the 43rd ASEAN Summit Retreat Session and a roundtable dialogue with the ASEAN-Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) and invited CEOs of different companies.
On the morning of Sept. 6, the President will attend the 26th ASEAN-China Summit, the 24th ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit, and the 26th ASEAN-Japan Summit.
Marcos will participate in more summits in the afternoon, starting with the 26th ASEAN Plus 3 Summit, the 11th ASEAN-US Summit, and the ASEAN-Canada Summit. The day will end with the Gala Dinner hosted by Indonesian President Joko Widodo for the ASEAN leaders and external partners.
President Marcos will then have separate bilateral meetings with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Thursday morning. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) initially said that Marcos would meet four Asian leaders, including Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Timor Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão.
The President will then attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit, both on Thursday morning.
Marcos will participate in the 3rd ASEAN-Australia Summit and the 13th ASEAN-UN Summit before attending the closing ceremony of the 43rd ASEAN Summit and the handing over of the ASEAN chairmanship to Lao PDR.
