Manila Water Co. vowed to ensure the safety of its customers in Eastern Metro Manila amid heavy rains and widespread flooding.

The company, which serves a customer base of 7.6 million, said it remains committed to delivering clean and safe water to its customers during the inclement weather conditions.

During the rainy season, water turbidity becomes a recurrent issue that affects the quality of the raw water supply.

Turbid water, characterized by its cloudiness and murkiness caused by suspended particles, debris, and pollutants like mud and silt, may pose health risks.

To address this concern, Manila Water said it has implemented a water safety plan designed for its water treatment plants and distribution network.

The plan incorporates standard rehabilitation processes such as coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection to ensure the effective treatment of the raw water.

In anticipation of high turbidity levels, Manila Water said it has also taken measures to equip its treatment facilities to handle such conditions efficiently.

These efforts have received the necessary approvals from the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewage System Regulatory Office (MWSSRO) and the Department of Health (DOH).

The company's proactive approach to combating turbidity aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on ensuring access to clean water and sanitation.

To ensure the consistency of water quality, Manila Water’s Laboratory Services division also conducts year-round monitoring by collecting samples from critical points within the supply network.

This allows the company to assess the quality of the water and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment processes to meet national drinking water standards.

Previously in 2022, the laboratory exceeded the requirement set by the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW). The MWLS achieved  5,841 sampling out of 5,344, which has a compliance rate of 109.3 percent.

Corporate Communications Affairs Jeric Sevilla said that Manila Water has already invested in systems and technologies that mitigate high turbidity brought on by the rainy season.

“Our state-of-the-art laboratory services see to it that the water quality in our distribution network passes the government standards for drinking water,” he added. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
