Kawasan Falls in Cebu reopens in October

CEBU CITY – A popular tourist destination in southern Cebu is set to reopen in October more than a year after it was closed for rehabilitation.

Gov. Gwen Garcia announced that the world-renowned Kawasan Falls in Badian will reopen this month after she saw positive developments in the rehabilitation efforts that were done in the area.

The governor made the announcement when she met Kawasan stakeholders on Thursday, September 29.

Garcia also led the inspection of the area.

A multi-layer waterfall system known for its clear turquoise water, Kawasan Falls sustained significant damage when the province was battered by typhoon “Odette” in December 2021.

The presence of illegally constructed structures also affected the scenic view of the area.

Garcia ordered Kawasan’s temporary closure in June 2022 after an investigation showed that hazardous materials and illegal structures were posing danger to guests.

During the meeting with town officials and tourism stakeholders, Garcia noted the significant changes in the area as a result of the rehabilitation efforts.

The governor emphasized the need for canyoneering guides to be trained to enable them to become more efficient and effective tourism ambassadors.

“It professionalizes them as guides and tourism ambassadors,” said Garcia in a report by Sugbo News, the Capitol’s media arm.

It was agreed that canyoneering guides will undergo a five-day extensive training.

Before the reopening, operators will be required to get a new Certificate of Compliance from the Provincial Tourism Office.

It was also agreed that the provincial board will come up with an ordinance that will regulate guide fees and other charges that will be collected from visitors.
