The Filipinos showed poise down the stretch as Bismarck Lina and John Rey Pasaol came through with the clutch baskets in the waning minutes to set up a quarterfinals pairing against South Korea later in the day.
It was a total team effort for the Filipinos with Pasaol leading the way with five points while Lina and Justine Sanchez adding four apiece.
Bryan Sajonia only had two points but scored the basket that mattered the most as he nailed a free throw that broke an 11-all deadlock inside the final two minutes of the contest.
Lina and Ramazan Samsin then traded baskets in the next few possessions before Pasaol gave Gilas a precarious 15-13 lead. The Filipinos, including their supporters inside the venues then collectively heaved a sigh of relief as the Kazakhs, who still got one clear shot at the basket before the buzzer, missed the potential game winner.
Samson finished with eight points but was the lone bright spot for Kazakhstan in the knockout match.
