House Speaker Martin Romualdez acknowledged on Sunday, Sept. 3 the positive impact on Filipinos that Gilas Pilipinas' dominant win over China will have "beyond the basketball court".
"We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Gilas Pilipinas for their stunning victory against China in the FIBA Basketball World Cup," Romualdez said in a statement as he shared in the euphoria of basketball-loving Filipinos following Gilas' 21-point thumping of the Chjnese national basketball team.
"Beyond the basketball court, this victory serves as a powerful source of inspiration, emphasizing that with determination and unity, any obstacle can be surmounted," the House leader said.
This was the closest that Romualdez would come to alluding the situation out in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), where the Philippines continues to stand its ground amid the incursions of regional giant China.
And while Romualdez didn't even mention the WPS, that body of water and country’s sovereign rights over it was clearly on Filipinos' minds as they watched Gilas' final match in the tournament.
"This achievement fills our nation with immense pride, highlighting the extraordinary talent and teamwork of Filipino athletes," the Leyte 1st district congressman said.
"This remarkable performance by our national team underscores their unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and indomitable spirit, setting an inspiring example for all. We stand united with the entire nation in celebrating this historic achievement and eagerly look forward to witnessing more remarkable successes from Gilas Pilipinas on the global stage," Romualdez further said.
