‘Hanna’ to exit PAR in 6 hours, but monsoon rains to persist

At a glance

  • Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remains hoisted over Batanes and the northern portion of the Babuyan Islands as Hanna’s strong winds continue to affect the extreme Northern Luzon.

  • The southwest monsoon or “habagat” being enhanced by Hanna will bring occasional rains to the western portion of Luzon and Antique over the next three days.

Typhoon Hanna (international name: Haikui) is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) in the next few hours, following its landfall and passage over Taiwan on Sunday evening, Sept. 3, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Hanna was moving westward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph), and was last located 270 kilometers northwest of Itbayat, Batanes

It has weakened but remains a typhoon, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph.

Tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 remains hoisted over Batanes and the northern portion of the Babuyan Islands as Hanna’s strong winds continue to affect the extreme Northern Luzon.

“Typhoon Hanna is forecast to exit the PAR region within the next six hours. From tonight (Sept. 3) to Tuesday morning (Sept. 5), the typhoon will gradually move west-northwestward over the Taiwan Strait while weakening and make landfall over the coast of Guangdong or Fujian, China on Tuesday morning as a severe tropical storm,” PAGASA said.

Enhanced ‘habagat’

PAGASA said the forecast accumulated rainfall associated with typhoon Hanna’s rainbands over Batanes has weakened.

However, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” being enhanced by Hanna will bring occasional rains to the western portion of Luzon and Antique over the next three days.

Until Monday evening, Sept. 4, moderate to heavy monsoon rains (50-100 millimeters) may prevail over Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Antique, and northern Palawan, including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, while heavy to intense rains (100-200 millimeters) may persist in Ilocos Region, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro.

From Monday evening to Tuesday evening, heavy rains may continue to affect Metro Manila, Benguet, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and northern Palawan, including Calamian and Cuyo Islands, while heavy to intense rains may prevail over Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan.

From Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening, Sept. 6, Ilocos Region, Zambales, and Bataan may continue to experience moderate to heavy rains.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are possible, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards,” PAGASA warned.
