The pressure surely weighs heavy on Sarina Bolden, Sara Eggesvik and the rest of the Philippine women’s national football team when they take on Japan in the quarterfinals of the 19th Asian Games on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Wenzhou Sports Centre Stadium in China.

The world No. 44 Filipinas and the Japanese side clash at 7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the semifinals of the Asiad.
It was actually Japan’s dominant 7-0 victory in Group D that helped the Philippines reach the second round of the continental meet due to its superior goal differential as there were only three best second-placed spots up for grabs.
The Nationals only needed a one goal win over Myanmar, and they’ve done that and more after coming away with a 3-0 victory two days prior in Group E to move to the next round along with top seed South Korea, which earned itself an outright berth.
Bolden opened the scoring for the third time in the tournament for the Filipinas before Eggesvik delivered a brace in a matter of one minute to completely lift the squad past the Myanmar side.
“[It’s] absolutely amazing. The girls executed a very good plan [against Myanmar]. We set ourselves to score in this game and we scored very well and we were excellent. So I’m grateful to be part of this opportunity and now we progress to the next stage which is excellent,” said Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso.
The Philippines kicked off its Asiad debut with a win after blasting Hong Kong in the second half of the match for a 3-1 victory before falling to South Korea, 5-1, the following game.
