Central Visayas logs 59,000 rabies cases

CEBU CITY – Rabies cases in Region 7 significantly increased this year, the Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) reported.

Dr. Ronald Jarvik Buscato, DOH-7 Medical Officer IV, said at least 59,000 rabies cases were recorded in the first two quarters of this year, 50 percent higher compared to the same period last year with 30,000.

While the increasing number of rabies cases may be alarming, Buscato said the spike could be attributed to consistent reporting of animal bite incidents.

Buscato said animal bite victims immediately seeking treatment in various animal bite and treatment centers may have contributed to the increasing cases of rabies.

He added that despite the increasing cases, deaths caused by rabies remained low.

So far this year, only 19 suspected rabies deaths were recorded in Central Visayas, Buscato said.

Buscato said the DOH-7 is pushing for responsible pet ownership to prevent rabies cases from further increasing.

Meanwhile, the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries (DVMF) here led the observance of the World Rabies Day on Thursday, September 28.

Aside from free anti-rabies vaccines, the DVMF also offered deworming, ligation, vitamin supplementation, pet consultation, and micro-chipping.
 
“Responsible pet ownership is the only way to solve the increasing rabies cases. If you have pets, do not forget to give them anti-rabies vaccines. Most of us do not know that we have free services like giving anti-rabies vaccination,” the DMVF said.
