MMDA launches Motorcycle Riding Academy to promote road safety

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday, Sept. 27, launched the Philippines’ first Motorcycle Riding Academy, a project that is aimed at educating motorcycle riders on traffic rules and road safety and eventually preventing accidents.

Located in a compound donated by the GSIS on Julia Vargas Avenue in Pasig City, MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes said training riders to become safer, more responsible and educated on traffic rules will help bring down the alarming data about road crashes in the Philippines.

“Ang hangad ko rito sa motorcycle academy ay bigyan ng edukasyon ang mga motorcycle riders para maiwasan ang disgrasya sa daan at babaguhin ko ang kanilang mindset nang sa gayon ay maging proud sila kung sakaling sila ay mag u-undergo ng training sa academy (My desire in the motorcycle academy is to give education to motorcycle riders to avoid accidents on the road and I will change their mindset so that they will be proud if they undergo training at the academy),” said Artes.

The two-day training is free and can accommodate up to 100 participants per batch.

Lectures of the training program cover basic riding courtesys, motorcycle orientation, road traffic rules and regulations, and motorcycle safety laws.

Upon successful completion of the training course, participants will be awarded certificates, recognizing their commitment to responsible and safe motorcycle riding practices. 

The certification not only validates their newly acquired skills but also underscores their dedication to following traffic rules, according to Artes.

The MMDA also announced that it received 10 motorcycle donations from Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos

Apart from Abalos, Honda Philippines, Inc. (HPI) donated an initial batch of 21 motorcycles to the MMDA. The brand will donate 29 more units for the program. Reports also state that Senator Christopher “Bong” Go donated 10 motorcycles to the agency.

“Ako po ay nagpapasalamat sa mga taong nagbigay suporta sa academy at sinisigurado kong matuturuan ang mga kababayan na nagmomotorsiklo ukol sa pagsunod sa batas trapiko, driving skills para makaiwas sa aksidente at basic emergency response (I am grateful to the people who supported the academy and I make sure that the countrymen who ride motorcycles can be taught about following traffic laws, driving skills to avoid accidents and basic emergency response).” said Artes

Based on data from the MMDA Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS), 2269 pedestrians were hit from January to August this year. That number is close to the 3,161 pedestrians who got into a road incident last year.

Present during the event were GSIS President Atty. Wick Veloso, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, Batangas Vice Governor Mark Lieviste, JoyRide PH Senior Vice President for Corporate Affairs Noli Eala, Co-founder and CEO of Angkas, George Royeca, and other members of vehicle services and stakeholders.
