Marcos urges PNP: Maintain zero tolerance vs corruption, human rights abuses

There is no room for corruption and abuse of power in the country's police force.

President Marcos made the statement as he administered the oath taking of 55 newly promoted star rank officers of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Malacañan on Wednesday, Sept. 27.

"[I]t is imperative that we reiterate our zero tolerance policy for corruption and human rights abuses within the PNP and for that matter, in all of government," Marcos told the PNP officers.

"Sa bagong Pilipinas na ating tinataguyod, walang puwang para sa hanay ng ating kapulisan ang korapsyon, pang-aaabuso sa kapangyarihan at iba pang katiwalaan na mga ilegal na gawain (In the new Philippines that we are establishing, there is no room for corruption, abuse of power, and other illegal acts in the police force)," Marcos added.

He reminded them that the foundation of effective law enforcement is "public trust rooted in constant and open public engagement."

Thus, he told them, it is incumbent for the new generals to prioritize dialogue, collaboration, and cooperation within the communities that they serve.

The President also told them to "nurture a bond of mutual respect and support" with the people who have faith and confidence in the police force.

"As officials, you are responsible for ensuring that all PNP personnel uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism, and respect for human rights," he said.

'I also expect that you will lead by example so that every officer and member under your commands will adhere to these same principles," he added.

The Chief Executive also assured the police force that the government will continue to pursue the modernization of the PNP and equip them with the latest technology, training, and resources to bolster their capabilities.

The 55 promoted PNP officials consist of one Police Lieutenant General, seven Police Major Generals and 47 Police Brigadier Generals. They are the second batch of newly promoted officers to take oath this month.

During the first oath taking ceremony, Marcos also told the PNP that there will be no room for leniency for erring police officers whose acts may tarnish the reputation of the country's police force.
