LTO fast-tracks license plate production to address backlog
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is eyeing the production of 42,000 plates per day as part of the measures to address the 13 million backlog in license plates for motor vehicles and motorcycles.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said around 11 machines will be in full operation starting next month, including two robotics machines that specialize in embossing the current license plates.
The LTO, through the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered around 15.9 million metal plates that will be used in the production of plates—both for new vehicles and those for replacement from green to white plates.
“It will take over two years to finish the entire 13 million backlog but while we are doing that, we would be able to cater the current usage of plates by October this year. The goal is to release the license plate for all the newly-bought motorcycles so that they would not be included in the backlog,” said Mendoza.
“We are also dedicating some machines to cover the backlog,” he added.
Almost all of the backlog is for the replacement plates of motorcycles.
Mendoza asked the motor vehicles owners affected by the backlog as he committed that addressing the issue is the main priority of the LTO.
Aside from the production of plates to address the backlog, Mendoza also committed to distribute all the unclaimed license plates before the end of the year.
