The world No. 44 Filipinas are looking to make it as far and deep as possible into their Asiad debut when they tussle with Myanmar on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Wenzhou Sports Centre Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Both squads share similar records of 1-1 in the Group E standings with a -2 goal differential (GD), making the spot for the next round potentially up for grabs for themselves.
The Philippines is coming off a painful 5-1 beating at the hands of world No. 20 South Korea earlier this week to see itself through the next round as the only unbeaten team so far in the group stage.
However, the Filipinas will not only need a victory against Myanmar, but also a dominant Japan win over Vietnam in Group D as only three of the second best placed teams from the five groups will make it to the next round.
Sarina Bolden opened the scoring for the Nationals in the previous matches against the Hong Kong side and the Koreans, which were both negated as their opponents immediately equalized.
Interestingly, the Filipinas last faced world No. 51 Myanmar in the group stage of the Southeast Asian Games last May, where they suffered a narrow 1-nil defeat that ultimately booted them out of the regional tournament due to inferior GD.
This time, though, the Philippines should have the competitive edge and experience following its historic FIFA Women’s World Cup debut last July, where it took home its maiden win against host nation and world No. 26 New Zealand.
