Who would have thought flip phones would make this big striking comeback? Yes, they were cool back then. Really cool, which edged close to meme status if memes had existed then. Then things changed. Phones swerved to the next most remarkable thing: impressive touchscreen phones. Fast-forward to now, we now have retro-modern technologies, which tap into nostalgia to make the somewhat stale touchscreen phones into something cool again: Touchscreens that can fold.
And so now, TECNO's PHANTOM brand is introducing its take on retro-modern devices with the PHANTOM V Flip 5G.
While all the rest have made the outer screens of their Flips bigger to fit its square shape, TECNO decides to switch things up a bit by introducing a circular cover screen. Talk about being on the pedestal.
The PHANTOM V Flip 5G features a 64MP+13MP+32MP camera system, which has, you guessed it, improved low-light capabilities -- a big requirement today as camera tech continues to scale up. People like being creative with their smartphone cameras, so TECNO is sure to deliver in that aspect.
According to a press release, the PHANTOM V Flip 5G has a 64MP RGBW Ultra Sensitive Sensor, which they say "benefits from 60% greater light intake, as well as reduced noise and improved color accuracy, thanks to its innovative RGBW pixel format."
TECNO has also integrated Fusion technology, where the 64MP camera gets a boost from the 13MP Ultra Wide Angle camera. This would result in a more detailed image, allowing users to enlarge and crop without too much compromise.
TECNO is also introducing their FreeCam system. They tried to describe this feature, but my limited brain capacity could not fully comprehend it.
Here's what they said, maybe it would make sense to you:
"Thanks to its flip construction, PHANTOM V Flip 5 G's opens up a world of shooting possibilities through its advanced FreeCam System. The device lets users elevate their imaginations and capture magic moments in inventive and beautiful images with front and rear lenses. Stable at any angle from 30-150Ëš, users can hover the device to shoot better group shots, detailed rear camera selfies, low-angle shots, FreeCam Time-lapses, and more. The strong hovering performance with gesture- and voice-controlled capture lets users enjoy hands-free creativity."
From my understanding, you can take images without a selfie stick or a stand because of the phone's flip nature. Just put down your phone and tilt it to your preferred angle.
Now, we can talk a little about that circular cover screen. TECNO calls it "The Planet." It's a 1.32-inch AMOLED screen designed for easy one-thumb controls. It has 352ppi with its customizable wallpapers and interactive pets--which sounds interesting, your own retro-modern Tamagotchi? Fun times. The Planet screen allows quick access to widgets, such as recorders, alarms, weather forecasts, and so on, so you don't need to keep flipping the device for smaller concerns.
The PHANTOM V Flip 5g has a 4000mAh battery and a 45W flash charging. TECNO says you will need 15 minutes to get 50% from zero and merely 45 minutes to a full charge from none.
A MediaTek Dimensity 8050 5G chip powers the phone with 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage.
On top of this, TECNO has done some tweaks in Android OS to create their HiOS 13.5, which they say has been optimized for flip-styled smartphones, improved use of widgets, and what appears to be an AI assistant called ELLAGPT. TECNO also boasts the PHANTOM V Flip has improved security.
