A 6.0-magnitude offshore earthquake was recorded in Davao Occidental at 9:39 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 26, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake 256 kilometers (km) southeast of Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.

It occurred at a depth of 155 km beneath the epicenter. It was initially measured at magnitude 6.6, but Phivolcs later revised it to magnitude 6.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Glan, Sarangani.

It was also felt at Intensity III (weak) in Malungon, Sarangani.

Meanwhile, it was “slightly felt” at Intensity II in Alabel, Sarangani and Koronadal, South Cotabato.

The earthquake was also "scarcely perceptible" at Intensity I in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Jose Abad Santos and Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, City of General Santos, City of Kidapawan, Tampakan and Polomolok, South Cotabato, and Malapatan and Kiamba, Sarangani.

Phivolcs said the tremor was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It said the earthquake may not have caused damage to houses, buildings, and other infrastructure, but advised the public to remain vigilant as aftershocks may occur. (Lizst Torres Abello)
