Libyan PM, UNICEF official discuss aid for flood victims

TRIPOLI, Libya -- The Libyan government and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) discussed organizing humanitarian operations in flood-hit areas in eastern Libya on Sunday, according to a government statement.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamed Dbeibah met with Adele Khodr, UNICEF regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, in the capital Tripoli, where Dbeibah stressed the need to strengthen cooperation in supporting primary healthcare for flood victims, particularly in the city of Derna, which suffered the most damage.

On the same day, UNICEF said in a statement on its website that it had received 65 tonnes of supplies to help cope with the aftermath of the floods in eastern Libya.

UNICEF said it has so far delivered health kits and medications for 84,000 people, water purification for 5,000 people, 500 clothing sets and 200 school-in-a-box kits for 8,000 children, and hygiene kits for 17,000 people.

On Sept. 10, Mediterranean storm Daniel triggered the largest and worst floods in decades in eastern Libya. Thousands of people were killed and tens of thousands displaced, while the region's infrastructure was severely damaged.
