A promising season awaits Jose Rizal University after setting the tone of their NCAA Season 99 campaign with a convincing 85-79 overtime win over defending champion Letran on Sunday, Sept. 24.

The Heavy Bombers are not only off to a winning start against the team to beat Knights, but were also glad to greet the new season with a promising redemption journey.
“It’s for us setting that tone on our first game. Siguro yong na-witness na lang naman natin ‘yong depth noong bench right now. Kasi that’s one thing na trinabaho namin during the offseason. We wanted to be unpredictable in terms of player usage. So kahit sino pwede pumutok any time,” said JRU head coach Louie Gonzales.
After last year’s chaotic end to its campaign involving former player John Amores, who has gone pro in the PBA and was present during the game, the squad is now boasting a deep and reliable bench capable of coming through when it matters the most.
The Heavy Bombers finished ninth in the standings in the previous season with a similar 7-11 win-loss record along with three other teams.
This time, though, things are looking pretty promising for the JRU side thanks to its offseason efforts.
“We were really struggling, especially shooting from the outside. We were trailing the whole game. Hirap kami makuha iyong tamang combination. Itong mga players ko right now lumabas ‘yong kanilang chemistry,” he added.
Both squads had a balanced scoring effort throughout the game, but the Heavy Bombers came out the better side in the added period for a 1-0 start in the standings.
