Songwriter belies report about 'Eat Bulaga' jingle

A former employee of the Television and Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE) refuted a news report stating that he admitted in court that TV host Vic Sotto composed the “Eat Bulaga” jingle.

The Marikina Regional Trial Court Branch 273 held a hearing on  Sept. 21 on the application for the issuance of writ of preliminary injunction in a copyright infringement and unfair competition case filed by Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, known as TVJ, and Jeny Ferre, against TAPE and GMA Network.

An online news report stated that during the hearing, Vincent Huang Dy Buncio, a former employee who was presented as TAPE’s witness, allegedly admitted during questioning by TVJ lawyer Enrique dela Cruz “that he only gave a few inputs to improve the jingle. He said the whole song was composed by Vic Sotto.”

In a statement, Buncio belied the report, saying Dela Cruz was not even present during the hearing.

"In the first place Atty. Buko [Enrique Dela Cruz] was not in said hearing. Secondly I said that I composed the lyrics of the song of ‘Eat Bulaga,’ the whole lyrics of the song and ‘E.A.T.’ is using it without my consent. This is false news", he said.

A certificate of copyright registration from the National Library of the Philippines showed Buncio is the author of the lyrics of the “Eat Bulaga” theme song.

Buncio was presented by TAPE as a witness with the aim to prove that he was an employee of Production Specialists Inc. (PSI) and later TAPE from 1979 to 1989 initially as a contributing writer and became a head writer, associate producer, assistant vice president for production and special projects for “Eat Bulaga.”

He was also presented with the aim to prove that TVJ did not conceptualize the show “Eat Bulaga and its segments as the show was conceptualized by Romeo Jalosjos and the segments were conceptualized by the production team hired by PSI and later TAPE.

TAPE also aimed to show that Tito, Vic and Joey were hired as hosts of “Eat Bulaga” and they just executed the segments being made by the production team hired by PSI and later TAPE.

Buncio was also presented with the aim to prove that he composed the lyrics of the theme song of “Eat Bulaga’ in 1982 when it was used for the launch of “Eat Bulaga” through channel RPN 9’s domestic satellite (DOMSAT).

He said he is demanding for a correction from the publication or he will file a libel case against the author and the publication.
