Here's the story behind Team Philippines' barong at the 19th Asian Games

Filipino fashion designer Puey Quiñones gives the traditional Filipino clothing a new look

For the longest time, the traditional barong tagalog has been reimagined to new styles, whether to suit contemporary demands, break gender lines in fashion, or bring to light the wonders of the Philippines' local textiles. All of that centers on one goal, which is to champion the heritage and culture of the country.

The same case can be seen at the Opening Ceremony of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. During the prestigious event last Saturday, the Philippines team stood proud as they raised the country's flag, while wearing a design by Puey Quiñones.

The LA-based Filipino designer was commissioned to create the team's barong tagalog. According to his post on Instagram, the design is a nod to the Madirigmang Pintados. The barong, which is made of jusi fabric, features bold yellow sun rays adorned with digital inspired by both the Ilustrados and the Mandirigmang Pintados.

"The inspiration behind the barongs for the national team at the Asian Games 2023 Parade was a blend of the rich Philippine heritage. We drew inspiration from the Ilustrados, who championed reform during the Spanish colonial period, and the Mandirigmang Pintados, pre-colonial warriors known for their bravery," Puey told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. "This concept aimed to empower our athletes by encapsulating both intellectual aspiration and the spirit of modern-day warriors. The design process involved meticulous planning, sketching, and alterations to ensure it perfectly represented our country."

The creation of barong tagalog for Team Philippines was a collaboration between Puey and Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino and Richard Gomez, congressman of Ormoc. Joining Tolentino in raising the flag were World No. 2 pole vaulter EJ Obiena and  2018 Asian Games gold medalist Margielyn Didal as flag-bearers.

Puey said he preferred not to make it available to the public. "It's important to note that we always customize each project to ensure it perfectly represents the unique vision and purpose behind it," the designer said. "Our focus has been on creating a one-of-a-kind design for our athletes at the Asian Games 2023."
