The world No. 44 Filipinas are set to face the Koreans, their fellow FIFA Women’s World Cup participants, on Monday, Sept. 25, at the Wenzhou Sports Centre Stadium at 7:30 p.m. to determine who will stay unbeaten in the pool play.
Both Group E squads are coming off opening victories against separate opponents to lead the standings with three points each, but the Koreans took the top seed with a superior goal differential (GD) of +3 after a dominant 3-nil win over world No. 51 Myanmar.
The Philippines, for its part, overcame world No. 77 Hong Kong with a 3-1 victory following back-to-back last-minute goals in the second half from Quinley Quezada and Katrina Guillou to rescue the squad from a stalemate.
The Filipinas are sitting second in the group standings with a +2 GD.
It was also newly appointed head coach Mark Torcaso’s first official win with the Nationals and while it wasn’t their best showing on the world stage, the Filipinas will have the opportunity to prove themselves against the Asian powerhouse once more.
The last time both teams played each other, the Philippines was handed a 2-0 semifinal loss by South Korea in the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2022.
Aside from Quezada and Guillou, the Nationals will also rely on Sarina Bolden, who actually opened the scoring early in their match against Hong Kong.
A win against the Koreans should also boost the Filipinas’ morale moving forward into the competition, where they are due to face Myanmar three days later to wrap up their group fixtures.
