Wear masks, stay indoors: DOH issues health advisory amid 'vog' presence

The Department of Health (DOH) issued a strong reminder to the public on Friday, Sept. 22, urging them to prioritize their health and well-being.

In light of the volcanic smog or “vog” presence, the DOH advised residents to take precautionary measures.

The DOH also recommended that individuals stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities to reduce their exposure to “vog.”

The health department also advised the public to keep doors and windows closed to prevent “vog” from entering indoor spaces.

If outdoor exposure is unavoidable, the DOH highly recommended the use of face masks."

Additionally, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help prevent throat irritation and dryness caused by vog, the DOH added.

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has recorded “vog” in Taal Volcano:

“Vog,” as described by Phivolcs, is composed of small ash particles containing volcanic gases such as sulfur dioxide.

It also stated that these gases have acidic properties and can potentially lead to eye irritation, throat discomfort, and respiratory issues, the severity of which depends on the concentration of gases and the duration of exposure.

The DOH further reports that the public is currently experiencing a decline in air quality, particularly in areas near Taal Volcano, neighboring towns, and even Metro Manila.

Residents are advised by the DOH to remain cautious and follow the provided health guidelines to safeguard their well-being during this period of increased “vog” activity. (Zekinah Elize Espina)
