Several Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) on Friday, Sept. 22, announced class suspension due to poor air quality caused by haze or smog formation.
University of Batangas (UB), Far Eastern University (FEU) Alabang and Cavite campuses, Manila Central University (MCU), Adventist University of the Philippines, De La Salle University (DLSU) Lipa and Laguna campuses, St. Dominic College of Asia, Lyceum of the Philippines (LPU) Batangas, and Cavite campuses, and Ateneo de Manila or Ateneo (AdMU) have so far announced the class cancellations.
The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman has also suspended both face-to-face and online afternoon classes.
However, various universities in Metro Manila will continue their classes virtually. These HEIs advised their students and faculty to take the necessary precautions amid the poor air quality.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the smog is not related to the Taal Volcano but due to “thermal inversion” or when “very small particles get trapped close to the surface due to the presence of a thermal inversion, high humidity, and calm wind conditions.”
