SAN NICOLAS, Pangasinan – Twenty-six Grade 11 students here were taken to the hospital due to heat exhaustion on Thursday, September 21.
Police said that they received a call from a concerned citizen informing them that students from San Felipe Integrated School felt dizzy and lost consciousness.
Lawmen with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)-San Nicolas and Rural Health Unit (RHU)-San Nicolas rushed the victims to the Eastern Pangasinan District Hospital in Tayug, this province.
Initial investigation said victims were having their class when one of them felt dizzy and lost consciousness followed by 25 others.
Preliminary findings from the attending physician said the incident was caused by heat exhaustion and hyperventilation.
Most of the victims are now in stable condition and some of them have been discharged from the hospital.
Heat exhaustion is a condition of fatigue and weakness, usually with normal body temperature, resulting from prolonged exposure to heat.
Temperature in the area was reportedly high that day.
