Gilas Pilipinas defeats Korean club LG Sakers in tune-up match

The Filipinos engaged in a nip-and-tuck affair with last season’s Korean Basketball League (KBL) semifinalists in the second half before emerging victorious. 

Naturalized player Justin Brownlee led Gilas' balanced attack, finishing with 19 points while June Mar Fajardo added 16.

Meanwhile, Calvin Oftana had a brilliant double-double performance of 13 points and 11 rebounds while Scottie Thompson had 11 points to help Gilas’ case. 

The game was open to the public as interim head coach Tim Cone continues to drum up support for the national team ahead of the Asian Games in China. 

Gilas is set to open its campaign at the Asiad against Bahrain on Tuesday, Sept. 26, in Group C. 

The five last-minute lineup replacements of CJ Perez, Arvin Tolentino, Kevin Alas, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Ross were also present in the friendly game, while supposed returning national team member Calvin Abueva was the only one not in attendance. 

After setting the tone in the first half, Gilas found itself briefly trailing with a 49-51 deficit in the third quarter before Oftana fired seven of his 13 points in the same period to lift the home bets.

There was no letup for both squads in the final quarter, but Gilas held on for the win in front of the loyal home crowd.

On the other hand, Dante Cunningham paced the LG Sakers with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Assem Marei and Dong Seop Lim added 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the losing cause.
