DOST optimistic G77+China Summit to benefit PH S&T initiatives
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. aimed for a positive outcome as the G77 and China Summit's discussion focused on the strategic goals of the Philippines.

“I am pleased because the themes discussed are in line with the government's program, and science and technology innovation, the four strategic thrusts that we are truly advocating were mentioned," Solidum said in a mix of English and Filipino in a televised briefing on Friday, Sept. 22.
The DOST chief emphasized that the event discussed four strategic thrusts, including "promotion of human well-being, quality of life, including health, adequate food, nutritional food, access to water, a clean environment, adequate clothing, and housing."
He said these thrusts are not the primary goals of the event. Instead, the emphasis is on encouraging "creation of wealth."
However, Solidum maintained that this wealth could be lost due to natural disasters and climate change.
"It must be in tandem with the creation of wealth by the protection of wealth, and this is through climate resilience and sustainability — our nature and planet can be preserved, especially through the use of traditional waste, especially in agricultural products. We can use it for other things," he added.
Stronger voice for Global South
Highlighting the challenges faced by countries in the Global South, the summit underscored the aim to have a stronger voice in having fair economic, science, and technology participation.
Solidum also underscored that the event is "where we can get collaborate with other countries because we can collaborate with different countries that have strong themes to work together so that progress and sustainable development can be continued."
As Solidum delivered his national statement on Sept. 16, he pointed out the challenges that require effective solutions in the Philippines.
These include poverty, hunger, food insecurity, health, energy, gender inequality, the digital divide, natural disasters, and climate change.
He emphasized the critical value of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in finding solutions and contributing to sustainable development.
At least 100 G77 member countries, as well as various international partner organizations, attended the two-day summit, which aimed to develop challenges centered on the critical role of science, technology, and innovation.
