BTS member Suga bid farewell to fans as he enlists in the military today, Sept. 22, for a 21-month mandatory duty.

“I have come this far, thanks to all of you, ARMY. And now it's time,” Suga posted on the Weverse app on Sept. 21.

He added, “I will faithfully complete my service and return. Be careful during the chilly fall season. Stay healthy and see you all in 2025! ARMY!!!! I am always grateful and love you.”

Big Hit Music announced on Sept. 17 the details about Suga’s enlistment.

Suga will be serving as a social worker or public duty personnel, an alternative form of military service.

While Big Hit Music did not discuss how Suga was assigned as a social worker, this could be due to a surgery he underwent in 2020. Suga underwent surgery for his torn shoulder tissue on Nov. 3, 2023.

Big Hit Music asked fans not to visit Suga at his workplace, where he will be assigned related to his social worker duties.

“There will not be any official events taking place on the day he starts his service or on the day he enters the training camp. We kindly ask fans to refrain from visiting Suga at his workplace during the period of his service. Please convey your warm regards and encouragement in your hearts only,” the agency said.

Under Korea’s Military Service Act, public duty personnel refers to “persons called up to serve in a field of public interest to support social service duties, administrative duties, etc. related to social welfare, hygiene, medical service, education, culture, environment, safety, etc. or to foster arts and sports, or for international cooperation, which are necessary for the following agencies, etc. serving public interest.”

Suga may be assigned to state agencies, local governments, public organizations or social welfare facilities.

Big Hit Music did not disclose the place and time of Suga’s enlistment and warned fans to “please be mindful to avoid getting adversely affected by unauthorized tours or package products that illegally use the artist’s intellectual property. Our company will take appropriate measures against attempts at any commercial activity that make unauthorized use of artist IP.”

“We ask for your continued love and support for SUGA until he completes his service and returns. Our company will also strive to provide all the support he needs during this time,” it said.

Suga is the third member of BTS to fulfill military service, a mandatory duty for all Korean men.

Jin enlisted on Dec. 13, 2022 and will be discharged on June 12, 2024. J-Hope started his service on April 18 this year and will be discharged on Oct. 17, 2024.

Suga canceled his privilege given under a law that allowed him to postpone his military service until age 30 so he could enlist early.

Big Hit Music previously said BTS members were aiming to regroup in 2025 after fulfilling their military service.

HYBE, the parent company of Big Hit Music, earlier announced that all seven BTS members have renewed their exclusive contracts, which will take effect starting 2025.

Suga will serve for 21 months and is set to be discharged on June 21, 2025.
