2 passengers hurt as jeepney loses brakes in Manila

Two passengers were injured after a public utility jeepney (PUJ) lost its brakes and crashed into a streetlamp post in Ermita, Manila on Thursday morning, Sept. 21.
The Manila Police District-Ermita Police Station (MPD-PS 5) has yet to disclose the names of the victims.
Jonathan Pedrosa La Torre, the PUJ driver, said his vehicle’s brakes suddenly malfunctioned while he was traversing the northbound lane of Padre Burgos Street in front of the Manila City Hall.
This caused him to hit a taxicab and a Yamaha motorcycle which were also traveling along the same lane.
Witnesses said the jeepney continued moving until it crashed into a streetlamp post.
The two passengers were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
The city government said the damaged post was safely removed at around 2 p.m.
The Manila Engineering Department also dispatched linemen to inspect the area and make sure that no other posts were damaged.
Police said the jeepney driver faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injury and damage to properties.
