National S&T Week 2023 celebration to kick off in Iloilo City

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officially announced the launch of the 2023 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), which will be hosted by the Visayas regional cluster in Iloilo City from Nov. 22 to 26.

For years, the Philippines has celebrated the success and dedication of Filipino scientists and engineers during a week-long festivity that typically took place in Metro Manila.

However, in this year's event, the host region will focus on "Creating and Protecting Wealth for a Sustainable Blue Economy," dubbed "Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon sa Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan,"

The five-day celebration will highlight “various research and development-based products and services from the DOST and the entire scientific community.”

It said since the Philippines is an archipelago, the emphasis will be on environmental and marine protection, aquatic and natural resources, and how innovative solutions can address the challenges faced by different sectors and regions in the country.

Meanwhile, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the DOST's commitment to “aligning our products and services with inclusive development, creating livelihood and career opportunities for Filipinos, especially in rural areas, and promoting the blue economy."

He explained that the DOST aims to transform the NSTW into a platform for collaboration between industry players, scientists, researchers, and policymakers to exchange ideas and work together in achieving inclusive development in their respective communities.

Furthermore, NSTW will continue to be held in the province every year, highlighting homegrown scientists and researchers from local state universities and colleges who have been instrumental in addressing critical concerns in various industry sectors through research and development.

It also said the regional S&T celebrations in different provinces will continue, to be held from August to November, and the main venue for the 2023 NSTW will be the Iloilo Convention Center, hosting techno-exhibits, S&T fora, and techno-demonstrations.
