CEBU CITY – The Department of Health-Central Visayas (DOH-7) asked the public to observe proper sanitation in food preparation after 11 pupils fell ill after eating homemade candies in Asturias, Cebu on Friday, September 15.
The victims were taken to a hospital for suspected food poisoning and the DOH-7 is investigating the incident in an elementary school in Barangay Manguiao.
In a statement, the DOH-7 said it is still awaiting the laboratory results of samples of the homemade candies.
Asturias Mayor Dana Andrew Dumdum confirmed the incident.
“This incident has deeply saddened us, as it is our duty to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members, especially our young students,” Dumdum said in a statement.
Dumdum said the municipal government will review and conduct food safety regulation inspections in schools.
She appealed to residents to practice proper food handling to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
“We also urge parents and students to exercise caution when consuming homemade or unfamiliar food products. It is essential to prioritize safety and be vigilant about the sources of such products,” Dumdum said.
The DOH-7 advised those who experience food poisoning symptoms to immediately seek medical help.
Symptoms of food poisoning include stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or fever, the DOH-7 said.
“We urge the public to implement strict sanitation practices such as handwashing, sterilization of utensils, and wearing of food-grade gloves, hairnets, and mouth covers during food preparation,” DOH-7 said.
“It is also advisable to source fresh ingredients from legitimate stores, refrain from mixing cooked and raw foods, and observe proper food storage.”
