The Department of Health (DOH) issued a health advisory on Wednesday, Sept. 20, to assist the public in preparing for potential health risks associated with Mayon Volcano's ash fall.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported ash eruptions from Mayon Volcano, maintaining an alert status of Level 3.

DOH recommended various respiratory safety measures in response to these volcanic activities.

Residents near the Mayon Volcano were advised to refrain from opening doors and windows or use thick curtains to reduce the entry of ash particles.

The necessity of using masks or other face coverings to protect the mouth and nose was also emphasized.

Suitable alternatives included surgical or medical masks, dust masks, or improvised covers made of strong cloth materials.

DOH also reminded people with asthma and allergies to keep an adequate supply of prescribed medication on hand and to follow their doctor's recommendations.

It also strongly advised immediate medical consultation in the event of any breathing difficulties.

DOH recommended using safety goggles to protect against ash particles during an ash fall. To avoid irritation and harm, contact lens wearers were advised to switch to eyeglasses.

It also advised people to avoid rubbing or scratching their eyes. In the event of eye irritation, rinsing with lukewarm running water was advised, followed by seeking professional consultation for any persistent vision issues.

DOH also emphasized food safety through proper handwashing, thorough product rinsing, checking for expired items, and securely covering water containers.

As a precaution against ash falls, it advised residents to stay indoors and avoid outdoor activities when conditions warranted caution.

Following an ash fall, the DOH advised removing ash deposits from residential building roofs and gutters.

If heavy ash falls continued, this task should be postponed.

It is critical to stay informed about road conditions and follow traffic regulations during these times. The DOH said that local authorities' advice should be followed to ensure personal safety and well-being.

It also emphasized the importance of preparedness, advising people to pack a "Go Bag" with essential supplies such as water, non-perishable food, clothing, first-aid supplies, and medications in case of an unforeseen volcanic emergency. (Zekinah Elize Espina)
