The Palace-ordered price ceiling on rice should guarantee Filipinos' access to the staple grain.
Thus, said Senator Grace Poe on Saturday, Sept. 2 even as she prodded President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to pursue longer-lasting solutions to the problem of rising rice prices.
"The imposition of the price ceiling should assure our people that rice remains accessible," she said.
"In the long run, solutions must be in place to keep the supply and prices steady, and bring growth to the agriculture sector, especially to our farmers," the majority senator said.
Marcos' Executive Order (EO) No. 39 imposed a P41 per kilo price cap for regular milled rice and P45 per kilo price cap for well-milled rice. The president is the concurrent Department of Agriculture (DA) secretary.
"Authorities must address the unhampered smuggling and hoarding that continue to undermine efforts to improve farmers' productivity, modernize our agriculture and reduce the retail price of the staple," Poe said.
She said the DA should also see to it that the benefits of the Rice Tariffication Law trickle down to the farmers to capacitate them to be competitive.
"We trust these issues are in the priorities, especially with the President sitting at the helm of the DA," Poe added.
