Women's group Gabriela on Saturday, Sept. 2, slammed President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos' decision to impose a rice price ceiling.

“Ang P30 na price ceiling ni Marcos para sa bigas ay isang malaking budol! (The price ceiling of P30 for rice set by Marcos is a big scam!),” said Gabriela Secretary-General Clarice Palce.
Marcos has approved the recommendation from both the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to implement a ceiling on rice prices.
This is under Executive Order (EO) No. 39, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Aug. 31, and will take effect on Sept. 5, where regular milled rice is priced at P41 per kilogram (kg) and P45 for well-milled rice.

Palce emphasized that the president's decision primarily impacts small-time retailers rather than addressing the issue of big hoarders manipulating rice prices.

However, Marcos’ decision did not sit well with Gabriela, noting that aside from being far from his promised P20 per kilogram of rice, the price cap only “targets small retailers instead of the big hoarders manipulating rice prices.”
Instead of imposing a price cap on rice, Gabriela said that the government should suspend the Rice Liberalization Law to restore the mandate of the National Food Authority (NFA) to set prices ranging from P27 to P32 per kg of rice.
This, Palce said, would make the Filipino staple food “more affordable for everyone.”
