Allies won't stand by PH vs China over WPS — Locsin

Manila's special envoy to Beijing for special concerns Teddyboy Locsin does not believe other countries would back the Philippines once it confronts China in its fight for territorial sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea.

"'Right-thinking' nations won't stand by us in a fight if China tried to make that map a reality in our neck of the waters; trust me on this," Locsin said in his post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.

His reaction came after Senator JV Ejercito called on "right-thinking nations and allies" to forge an alliance to dismiss China's recent attempt to impose its purported territorial scope by releasing its 2023 standard map that overlapped with the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and territories of several countries, including the Philippines.

Ejercito believed "there's strength in numbers." Several nations have repeatedly stated in the past its support for the Philippines over its fight for the West Philippine Sea, with the United States committing to invoke its Mutual Defense Treaty with the country in case of an armed attack against its assets in the said waters.

But Locsin, who is also the country's ambassador to the United Kingdom, believed allied nations would only "want to bleed China dry in our country as the battlefield farthest from themselves."

So he encouraged the Filipino people to "do the bleeding on our own national behalf" because "we have no responsibility to cowards."

"We're good for a fight on our own behalf. And it is coming and we will be alone. But so what? We were alone in World War 2 until the curtain was coming down on our burning capital," he said.

"Why I voted for Ukraine. I saw our future there: lauded universally, sympathized [globally], but fighting alone. Look at Ukraine—within spitting distance of Russia; look at us," he added.
