P437-M aid provided to Mayon victims after three months of unrest

More than three months after Mayon Volcano’s unrest began, the national government continues to provide relief assistance to displaced residents in Bicol Region (Region 5) which now amounted to P437 million, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.
OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno assured Mayon victims that the provision of much-needed food and non-food aid will not cease until all of them are able to get back to their homes.
“The national government continues to carry out response operations activities as we monitor the situation in Bicol relative to Mayon’s unrest to ensure that all needed assistance is provided to the affected communities. Various government agencies including us at the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) are working together on this,” Nepomuceno said on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Mayon Volcano’s alert was raised to Level 3 (increasing tendency towards hazardous eruption) on June 8 following a sharp increase in the incidence of rockfall from its summit lava dome.
Latest data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that as of Sept. 16, a total of 9,876 families or 38,396 individuals were affected by Mayon’s restiveness in Bicol Region.
More than 12,000 of them were still living in 21 evacuation centers across the region.
The OCD responded to the needs of the affected families since then.
It conducted field visits and inspection of warehouses and evacuation centers to ensure there are sufficient relief assistance for the displaced victims. It also deployed assets for the delivery of relief aid and water filtration equipment to the affected municipalities in Bacacay, Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Ligao, Malilipot, Sto. Domingo, and Tabaco.
Nepomuceno said the OCD has provided a total of P25 million worth of food and non-food items for the Mayon victims such as family food packs, tents, sleeping kits, hygiene kits, potable water, and financial support among others.
Meanwhile, the total cost of logistical support provided by OCD with assistance from the Department of Health (DOH) reached P67 million.
“The combined assistance provided by various agencies as of today is now at P437 million,” Nepomuceno shared.
On the other hand, the OCD and Department of Scoail Welfare and Development have a combined P2.3 billion worth of remaining available resources from its standby funds and prepositioned relief stockpile.
As of Tuesday, Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3 as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 12 volcanic minor earthquakes, 115 rockfall events, and six pyroclastic density current or PDC events in the past 24 hours.
