EUGENE (AFP) -- Ethiopia's 10,000m world champion Gudaf Tsegay shattered the women's 5,000m world record on Sunday, Sept. 17, winning the Diamond League finals at Eugene, Oregon in 14min 00.21sec.

The 26-year-old Tsegay shaved almost five seconds off the previous record of 14:05.20 set by Kenyan Faith Kipyegon in Paris on June 9.

Kenyan Beatrice Chebet was second to Tsegay in 14:05.92, the third-fastest time ever.

"My focus today was the world record," said Tsegay, who won the 2022 5,000m world title on the same Hayward Field track in Eugene.

After two race pacemakers dropped away, Tsegay was guided by the "wave light" trackside lighting technology, pulling away from cross country world champion Chebet to cross the finish line on her own.

Tsegay led an Ethiopian sweep in the 10,000m in Budapest, but a week later she was 13th in the 5,000 won by Faith Kipyegon, a result that Tsegay said left her "very hungry in my mind."

Sunday's performance had her turning her sights toward 2024, the Paris Olympics and the chance of breaking through the 14-minute barrier.
