Significant increase in volcanic quakes observed in Mayon --- Phivolcs

Phivolcs also monitored 147 rockfall and five pyroclastic density currents (PDC) events, produced 1551 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day, and spewed a 400-meter (m) tall plume that drifted west.
Phivolcs noted that Mayon Volcano will remain on Alert Level 3 (intensified or magmatic unrest).

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Sunday, Sept. 17, detected an increase in volcanic tremor events in Mayon Volcano, Albay.

In its latest bulletin, Phivolcs reported that the Mayon Volcano exhibited 12 volcanic tremors, nine tremors higher than the number recorded on Sept. 16.

Meanwhile, the volcano showed a slow effusion of lava flows from the crater with lengths of 2.8 kilometers (km) in Mi-is (south), 3.4 km in Bonga (southeastern), 1.1 km in Basud Gullies, and four km of lava collapse from the crater.

Phivolcs also monitored 147 rockfall and five pyroclastic density currents (PDC) events, produced 1551 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day, and spewed a 400-meter (m) tall plume that drifted west.

Remains in Alert Level 3

Phivolcs noted that Mayon Volcano will remain on Alert Level 3 (intensified or magmatic unrest).

Given this, Phivolcs said entry within a six-km radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is still prohibited and it also disallowed pilots of any aircraft from flying closer to the volcano.

The prohibition is due to possible hazards that can occur, like rockfalls, landslides, or avalanches; ballistic fragments; lava flows, and lava fountaining; pyroclastic density currents; moderate-sized explosions; lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall.
