2023 is a landmark year for OPM icon Ogie Alcasid. He's celebrating 35 years in the industry and doing a series of US tours with fellow " KilaboTitos" star Ian Veneracion. Last July, he also released a new Extended Play (EP) titled "Songs From Home."
For his local fans, Ogie isn't letting the year draw to a close without staging a concert that they will surely love. It's a unique, interactive show dubbed "Ogieoke: The Concert" which will unfold at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Friday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m.
"Anniversary kasi ng Newport Resorts World, it's their 14th year. They wanted to celebrate and they asked me to do a concert. At the same time nag-birthday ako noong August 27, hindi ako nakapag-celebrate because I had to leave for Kilabotitos. So parang birthday party ko na itong concert," Ogie told the movie press during a late dinner at Vanilla Cafe in Quezon City.
Joining Ogie in the show are real-life talented couple Gian Magdangal and Lara Maigue. The director will be his high school classmate Paolo Bustamante.
"I have a lot of other surprise guests," he revealed. Will it be his wife Regine Velasquez or his colleagues in It's Showtime? Ogie can only say: "I will not announce them. Surprise na lang!"
Ogie said he's paying homage to the Pinoy's penchant for karaoke which is the country's second favorite pastime next to gossip. "It's nothing new to be honest, but in a concert setting medyo bago sya."
"My idea was really to make it fun. I wanted it to be lively. In fact, for the opening, I wrote a theme song called 'Ogieoke.' I incorporated spiels in the song so that when you watch the concert, you will understand why we did it. It's really a night where we celebrate our culture because karaoke is really our thing," Ogie pointed out.
The concert itself will be done in the real videoke style with scores at the end. The audience can also freely come up on stage to showcase their singing prowess.
"Buong show may lyrics, para kang nagsimba," he quipped.
Ogie revealed that 80 per cent of the songs in the concert will not be the original compositions that made him famous. Instead, the repertoire will be 80s songs, or the tunes that he grew up with.
What will definitely be included in the list is the Frank Sinatra classic " My Way." It is Ogie's new favorite anthem because it reminds him of his late father, Herminio Sr. In fact, the singer has posted a touching video of them singing it in his social media accounts.
"My Way is my father's favorite and it's becoming my song too. Wala din naman kasing kumakanta nyan dito. Walang singer na inaangkin yan," Ogie remarked.
"In my US concerts, My Way is my most applauded song, may standing ovation pa sila. According to my own survey, My Way is my number one song, and the number 2 is Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang," he pointed out.
