Being the daughter of the renowned Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen and model Cecilia Wang, Jasmine Yen is starting to make her name in the spotlight.
She started her love for music at a very young age. Jasmine listens to every Disney song that makes her dive into the beauty of creating music.
In an exclusive Zoom with Manila Bulletin Entertainment last Sept. 28, the 19-year-old singer shared how music became a way to express her feelings and her journey on releasing her debut album "tbh."
"Growing up, I've always been very shy, so I really didn't know how to express myself with words. So, I always write my feelings down, leading to the imagination of songwriting. And, so I started writing my songs when I was seven," Yasmine said.
She also shared that her biggest musical influences include Beyonce, Rina Sawayama, and Janelle Monae.
Performing for the first time at the age of nine at her aunt's wedding before 2,000 people, that's when Jasmine realized that singing was not just a phase for her.

Taking little steps on her journey as a singer and songwriter and taking a gap year at her college in Berkeley, Jasmine also thanked her parents, Donnie and Cecilia, for giving her the needed support and advice.
"They know that I've been hard on myself regarding my song. I'm my critique. So I think the best advice my parents gave me is to relax a little bit and just be myself," she said.
Although her music is her focus right now, Jasmine mentioned that she is open to making movies like her dad.
"I never consider doing films, but I'm open to doing that in the future, but not right now," she added.
She sealed the deal with RCA Records Greater China, a Sony Music Entertainment (SME) division, which released her first single, "idk." Mixing Chinese and English in her song, she shared that it represents her as a person.
"I actually went to an international school, so I spoke to my friends in English, but when I'm back home, we obviously have asian values, and so I speak Chinese with my grandma, so I thought it's really important to represent that side in my music," she said.
Infusing two kinds of languages in her song shows her versatility as an artist.
Presenting herself to the world as Jasmine Yen, her album "tbh" became a staple reminder to step out of her comfort zone in okay.
"I think this album really encourages me to not be afraid to explore different emotions and to be confident in myself, so I hope my listeners also get to be inspired with my song and give them the encouragement that they need," she said.
Yen also hopes to empower other young girls through her music: follow your heart and don't sacrifice your joy for someone else. By singing to them to 'put themselves first,' the song is an ode to building healthy and fulfilling relationships.
