The Department of Education - Malabon (DepEd-Malabon) and the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) signed on Friday, Sept. 15, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the establishment of the "Red Cross Youth Council" in all schools in the city.

It was attended by PRC-Malabon Chapter Chairman Ricky Sandoval, PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang, DepEd-Malabon Schools Division Superintendent Cecille Carandang, members of the Board of Directors of PRC-Malabon Chapter, school principals, and PRC volunteers.
According to the Malabon Public Information Office, there are a total of 69,853 students -- including 47,031 elementary students, 20,818 junior highschool students, and 2,004 senior highschool -- who registered for membership.
The youth councils will be established to promote volunteerism in health and safety, disaster preparedness, and basic life support among the youth in Malabon.

Sandoval said that the agreement aims to strengthen and formalize the partnership between the two essential pillars of the community that aims to provide better education for the youth and serve the citizens through various programs for health, calamities, and other initiatives.
"Philippine Red Cross and DepEd Schools Division Office-Malabon have long been working diligently to make a positive impact on our beloved city," she said.
"Today's agreement is a testament of the shared vision of the Philippine Red Cross and the DepEd Schools Division Office-Malabon. It is a commitment to further collaborate, pooling resources, knowledge, and expertise to enhance the welfare of our community, especially during emergencies and times of need," the mayor added.
“Also, the partnership will lead to joint initiatives that aim to strengthen disaster preparedness and response, improve health and safety education in our schools, and promote a culture of volunteerism among our students. It's a commitment to building a safer, more resilient, and compassionate Malabon,” she added.

Pang stated that their partnership with the Deped Malabon marks a significant step towards achieving several crucial objectives.
Pang added that they would like to see Red Cross Youth Councils in all the schools in Malabon.
“We are going to saw the seeds of volunteerism, compassion, resilience, and selflessness for the generations to come,” she said.
According to Pang, the agreement is a testament of a shared commitment between the PRC and DepEd to nurture the "Red Cross spirit" in the youth.
"Also, it would be great to have youth councils in all schools because if there's a Red Cross Youth Council, you may be able to foster a generation of humanitarian volunteers in the years to come),” she said.
According to the city government, there are 83 elementary and high schools in the city (42 public schools and 40 private schools).
