  • Based on the latest data from the Learner Information System (LIS) for SY 2023-2024, DepEd said the total number of enrolled learners for the new school year had reached 26,912,559.
  • DepEd noted that an "accurate determination as to whether enrollment numbers have dropped compared to previous years cannot be made at this time" because the encoding of learners in the LIS is "still ongoing.”
  • The total number of enrollees for the current SY, DepEd said, will be announced "once the encoding period closes" on Oct. 30, 2023.

Amid concerns about the alleged drop in enrollment this school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday, Sept. 16, said that it will announce the total number of enrollees for School Year (SY) 2023-2024 once the encoding period closes in October.

“For the information of the public, an accurate determination as to whether enrollment numbers have dropped compared to previous years cannot be made at this time,” DepEd said.

This, the agency explained, is due to the “fact that the encoding of learners in our Learners Information System is still ongoing.”

In the meantime, DepEd said that it will “consistently provide the public with regular updates on enrollment figures as they continue to increase.”

It also plans to announce the total number of enrollees for the current SY once the encoding period closes on Oct. 30, 2023.

Enrollment reaches 26.9M

Based on the latest data from the Learner Information System (LIS) for SY 2023-2024 as of Sept. 15, DepEd said the total number of enrolled learners for the new school year had reached 26,912,559.

Region IV-A still has the highest number of registered learners with 3,913,016; followed by Region III with 2,956,658; and the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,779,389.

DepEd also recorded 330,578 enrollees under the Alternative Learning System (ALS).

The enrollment running total includes learners in both public and private schools, State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and Local Universities and Colleges (LUSCs) that offer basic education, as well as Philippine schools overseas.

In the same statement, DepEd clarified that Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte did not “allude to rallies as being the reason for the alleged drop in enrollment.”

DepEd also criticized a “highly-sensationalized, inaccurate and misleading” article referencing the speech of Duterte at the Peace Village on Sept. 11, noting that “distortion of facts for click-bait purposes should not be tolerated.”
