The JM Estorque-saddled Red Sole, AR Villegas-ridden Vavavoom and LF de Jesus-charged Top of the Line will be the horses to watch when the Philippine Racing Commission holds a charity race dubbed the Philippine Sportswriters Association Cup at the Metro Manila Turf Club, Inc.’ ground in Malvar, Batangas on Sunday, Sept. 17.

A guaranteed prize worth P300,000 including P150,000 and a trophy to the winner will be staked in the Class 4 (22-27) nine-horse 1.4-kilometer race that will have the PSA as its main beneficiary.

Distant Thunder (JT Pabilic), Sheltex Magic (Ni Uy, Jr.), Silver Lining (JR Gellada), Lucky Lea (Dan Camanero), Biglang Buhos (CP Henson) and Danueis Son (JA Guce) are the other colts expected to make a run at the top purse.

Apart from the PSA Cup, the Philracom through its generous president Reli de Leon, is also devoting another race for the New Philippine Jockeys’ Association.

De Leon initiated the move to have the PSA Cup and was made official through a recent letter sent to PSA president and The Philippine STAR sports editor Nelson Beltran that was signed by Philracom acting executive director Ronaldo Corpuz.

“The proceeds of the race to be given to your association will depend on the race’s gross betting sales from the Metro Manila Turf Club, Inc.,” said Corpuz.

The Philracom has been generous in the past as it held five charity races for the Philippine team that saw battle in last year’s Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

It was coursed through the Philippine Sports Commission and benefitted around 800 athletes.
