PH football, rowing teams leave for Asian Games

National teams from women’s football and rowing leave for Hangzhou, China on Saturday, Sept. 16, for the 19th Asian Games scheduled next week.

The two squads will be the first PH crew to arrive in China as their competitions are set days before the official opening of the quadrennial event on Sept. 23.

Football hostilities fire off on Tuesday, Sept. 19, while rowing competitions start on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

The Asiad-bound Filipinas are composed mostly of athletes who saw action in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in New Zealand last July that include Tahnai Annis, Sarina Bolden, Sara Eggesvik, Olivia McDaniel, Quinley Quezada and Hali Long, to name a few.

Also in the lineup are Alicia Barker, Reina Bonta, Jessika Cowart, Malea Cesar, Isabella Flanigan, Kiara Fontanilla, Carleigh Frilles, Sofia Harrison, Maya Alcantara, Eva Madarang, Chandler McDaniel, Inna Palacios, Dominique Randle, Jaclyn sawicki and Meryll Serrano.

This would be the first time that the country is fielding a women’s football team in the Asian Games as it seeks to ride on the momentum of its historic participation in the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez banners the rowing team that is composed of Joanie Delgaco, Edgar Ilas, Zuriel Sumintac, Feiza Lenton and Tammy Sha in their bid to end a 21-year-old medal drought.

The first and last time the country won an Asiad medal in the sport was in the 2002 Busan edition in South Korea courtesy of Alvin Amposta and Nestor Cordova, who bagged the lightweight double sculls bronze medal.

The 23-year-old Nievarez will compete in the men’s single sculls, while Delgaco will battle in the women’s single sculls. Ilas and Sumintac will team up in the lightweight men’s double sculls, even as Lenton and Sha will participate in the lightweight women’s doubles sculls.
