Guiuan, Eastern Samar hosts NextGen Pilipinas surfing tour leg
GUIUAN, Eastern Samar – Ten years after typhoon “Yolanda” or “Haiyan” barreled through Eastern Visayas and made its first landfall here, Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan is relaunching the town as one of the region’s top tourism destinations especially in historical and surfing tourism.
A national surfing tour returns to the shores of Calicoan here for the second leg of the 2023 NextGen Pilipinas Surfing National Tour.
The surf competition sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association will be held from September 15 to 21 with the support of numerous local establishments and organizations.
Just like the first stop in Pagudpud, winners will receive 750 points and P50,000 for the men's and women's divisions since UPSA upholds equality in sports.
The tournament hosted by the local government unit of Guiuan will be held at the renowned ABCD break, a wide-open reef with pounding left-handers.
The surf break got its catchy name from the Advance Base Construction Depot which played a pivotal role in the operations of the air and naval bases of the Allied Forces in Guiuan during World War II.
Guiuan is located at the southernmost tip of Samar Island and is three hours away from Tacloban City, the capital of Eastern Visayas.
